What is Swarm software?
Swarm is a unified, software-defined object-based data storage platform, designed to store unstructured data (also referred to as fixed content). This includes a wide variety of content such as documents, email, images, audio, video, voice mails, ringtones, and medical images and records.
Swarm software runs on standard, commodity server hardware (x86), which enables organizations to implement affordable clustered storage that delivers high performance, scalability and reliability. Swarm may be used to store part of all of an organization’s content, depending on the use case. Swarm provides a highly secure and cost-effective platform so you can archive content for the duration of its useful life.
What is object-based data storage?
Object-based storage (also referred to as object storage), pioneered by Caringo co-founder Paul Carpentier, is data storage architecture that stores and manages data as objects in a single flat namespace using keys and values. Object storage is used to economically store and protect large unstructured data sets (i.e., documents, audio, photos and video).
How is object storage different than my NAS or Tape storage?
The differences (between object storage, NAS and tape) that matter will depend on your workflow and use case. Each technology is valuable in its own way. NAS is traditionally used to serve files within a network directly to end users or applications. Tape is traditionally used as a way to economically archive or backup data for disaster recovery purposes. If you need data back from tape, it may take a few minutes or a few days depending on the location of the tape and drive.
Object storage fits between NAS and tape storage technologies, and is advantageous for use cases where massive scalability, multi-tenant management and immediate data access is required. Object storage delivers hassle-free management at scale at a TCO (total cost of ownership) that is close to tape and is accessible over HTTP via RESTful interfaces like S3 and traditional storage protocols like SMB and NFS.
How is object storage different then Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud?
All of the aforementioned cloud storage services are enabled by object storage deployed on the service provider’s infrastructure and network. When you incorporate object storage into your environment (i.e., you install object storage on your infrastructure and network), you are essentially building your own private cloud.

What is the minimum and maximum capacity?
You can start off as small as you would like, running the Swarm VMs on a laptop with 12 GB of storage or deploy Swarm on any x86 server hardware. With a 128-bit namespace, you can also scale to exabytes of data and trillions of objects.
How does Swarm plug into my workflows?
Swarm supports the S3 interface, and most applications or devices that can write to S3 can write to Swarm out of the box. We also have a macOS, Windows and Linux based application you can mount as a drive, along with NFS, SMB and WebDAV interfaces. Application developers can also integrate Swarm directly into applications via our API and SDKs.
