What is Swarm software?
Swarm is a unified, software-defined object-based data storage platform, designed to store unstructured data (also referred to as fixed content). This includes a wide variety of content such as documents, email, images, audio, video, voice mails, ringtones and medical images and records.
Swarm software runs on standard, commodity server hardware (x86), which enables organizations to implement affordable clustered storage that delivers high performance, scalability and reliability. Swarm may be used to store part of all of an organization’s content, depending on the use case. Swarm provides a highly secure and cost-effective platform so you can archive content for the duration of its useful life.
What is object-based data storage?
Object-based storage (also referred to as object storage), pioneered by Caringo co-founder Paul Carpentier, is data storage architecture that stores and manages data as objects in a single flat namespace using keys and values. Object storage is used to economically store and protect large unstructured data sets (i.e., documents, audio, photos and video).
How is object storage different than my NAS or Tape storage?
The differences (between object storage, NAS and tape) that matter will depend on your workflow and use case. Each technology is valuable in its own way. NAS is traditionally used to serve files within a network directly to end users or applications. Tape is traditionally used as a way to economically archive or backup data for disaster recovery purposes. If you need data back from tape, it may take a few minutes or a few days depending on the location of the tape and drive.
Object storage fits between NAS and tape storage technologies and is advantageous for use cases where massive scalability, multi-tenant management and immediate data access is required. Object storage delivers hassle-free management at scale at a TCO (total cost of ownership) that is close to tape and is accessible over HTTP via RESTful interfaces like S3 and traditional storage protocols like SMB and NFS.
How is object storage different then Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud?
All of the aforementioned cloud storage services are enabled by object storage deployed on the service provider’s infrastructure and network. When you incorporate object storage into your environment (i.e., you install object storage on your infrastructure and network), you are essentially building your own private cloud.
How is Swarm object storage different when compared to other object stores?
Swarm is a best-of-breed product that offers a complete software appliance that doesn't rely on a file system. Running directly from RAM, Swarm uses a parallel architecture along with a patented bidding algorithm and power conservation technology to deliver many benefits, including:
- Automated rapid recovery (not manual or on-read like other object stores)
- Superior efficiency with 20–30% less storage overhead (when compared to other object storage technologies), delivering a market-leading 95% storage hardware utilization for your content
- Exceptional performance including 5x faster throughput for S3 read and write operations
- Unrivaled availability, enabling you to search, share and stream data securely from the storage layer with no scale limitations
What is the minimum and maximum capacity?
You can start off as small as you would like, running the Swarm VMs on a laptop with 12 GB of storage or deploy Swarm on any x86 server hardware. With a 128-bit namespace, you can also scale to exabytes of data and trillions of objects.
How does Swarm plug into my workflows?
Swarm supports the S3 interface and most applications or devices that can write to S3 can write to Swarm out of the box. We also have a macOS, Windows and Linux based application you can mount as a drive, along with NFS, SMB and WebDAV interfaces. Application developers can also integrate Swarm directly into applications via our API and SDKs.
Data Storage Product Collection
Simple Drive Access to Swarm
Caringo Drive is a virtual drive for Caringo Swarm Scale-Out Hybrid Storage. Once installed on macOS® and Windows® you can easily drag and drop files to Swarm. This gives you convenient access to Swarm on macOS and Windows, speeds content uploads and allows you to use Swarm Storage for your applications.
Automated Lifecycle Management
FileFly transparently moves cold data from primary storage environments to Caringo Swarm, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud or any S3-compatible archive storage. Simply select the level of file data movement based on business requirements. Then, reap the benefits of consolidating data on a single platform that ensures data can be easily accessed, regardless of whether it’s on prem, in the cloud or in a hybrid environment.
Object-based Storage Software
Swarm object storage software provides a platform for data protection, management, organization and search at massive scale. You no longer need to migrate data into disparate solutions for long-term preservation, delivery and analysis. Consolidate all files on Swarm, find the data you are looking for quickly and reduce total cost of ownership by continuously evolving hardware and optimizing use of your resources.
On-prem, S3-accessible Data Storage Devices
With the industry’s most flexible object storage deployment options, Swarm Appliances let you start with just one server and scale out at any time based on your business requirements.
