The Evolution of File and SwarmNFS

Learn how the SwarmNFS converter allows you to stream data directly into and out off Swarm—creating a fully distributed NFS architecture.

I’ve spent the past two decades of my life architecting data and storage solutions, so, it is no surprise that I find the history of file interesting. At Caringo, I focus on bridging the gap between traditional storage (for example, SAN, Block & NAS) and our modern-day scale-out object storage (Caringo Swarm). Earlier this summer, I blogged about how to transparently offload your primary storage (particularly NetApp Filers and Windows File Servers) to scale-out object storage and facilitate search and extraction of value from that data with FileFly. Last week, I had the pleasure of introducing our next step to evolving file with SwarmNFS, the first lightweight file converter to bring the benefits of scale-out object storage to NFSv4.

We call SwarmNFS a converter, because it is not a “connector” or a file “gateway” in the traditional sense. It truly is a converter that allows you to stream data directly into and out off the Swarm object store—creating a fully distributed NFS architecture with distributed mount points. In addition, files read and written to Swarm inherit Swarm’s multi-tenancy,security, protection and built-in high availability. With a global namespace and universal access, files can be written, read and edited through any interface: NFSv4, SCSP/HTTP, S3, or HDFS.
