There are two quite different real-world applications of the Caringo Swarm Cloud & Object Storage Platform—one using a bridging solution from legacy file servers and another that takes advantage of new cloud interfaces like RESTful APIs (HTTP or S3).
So how do you bridge the old and the new world of storage?
We must first start with a scale-out storage platform. Best practices of a proper software-defined storage solution should lower overall TCO via the use of commodity hardware and offer built-in data protection and self-healing—meaning no single point of failure—and high availability right out of the box. The solution should be able to start small yet easily scale to 10s or even 100s of petabytes.
Then, you need a new way to organize and manage data that can combine the directory/folder approach of legacy systems with the structureless approach of a cloud world. The answer is customizable metadata. With object storage, you can add custom metadata to an object or group of objects which enables you to perform detailed searches and analytics on that data. This includes adding legacy directory and filename information. Why is this important?
As we’ve discussed before in this blog, expectations of file storage have changed dramatically over the years. With 7 to 40 zettabytes of data expected by 2020 and 90% of this data unstructured (photos, videos, log files, etc.), coupled with the expectation to store everything and allow access from any device infinitely, we have a generation of people who have been “cloud conditioned.” That is, they expect on-demand, instant access to information.
